MALLE Mile 2018. We Raced for 48 minutes...We laughed for 48 hours.
The Slaughter House Customs team, gleefully found ourselves heading back to the Malle Mile for the third year running. The Mile is a 3 day affair, featuring all things motorcycle and automotive. This wonderful event features an exhibitions, motorcycle racing, charity dinner, live music and after party, all set in the grounds of the beautiful Kefington Hall.
This year the Mile featured some new classes, the 100- a race for 100 riders to race in teams of 10 around a windy oval track. All women's class supported by VC London, an all women motorcycle brand celebrating, empowering and supporting women to get out on the road. The Electric class sponsored by English Electric Company all hoping to get a chance of placing yourself on the leaderboard and go through to the finals on the Sunday.
Slaughter House Customs Chose this year to enter into the 2 classes of the 100 and the electric class. With around 300 bikes racing this year we had to create a bike to stand out. Using the Victorian slaughterhouse at the bottom of the garden, we set out to create a bike to stand out- We did that by creating the EZ Rider electric chopper. The SHC bike was based on an Italian electric scooter use for delivering post in the European mountains. We knew that something designed to drive up Swiss hills would pack the punch needed for the grass track! We also chose to use our trusty DR400s for the 100 race, 1980s retro would be the only way.
We arrived on the Friday afternoon, the gate open at 3pm and a flurry of activity began as we started to see the exciting machines that our components had brought along, classics to customs-4 there was an array of unique cycles. We set up base with our 2 1989 VW t25 camper vans, before heading down to the House and paddock to talk with like minded women and men about their awesome machines. The evening started with the first rounds of moto-polo where by 2 teams accelerate and mannouver their steads to score points by kicking the ball into the opposing team's goal. A visual extravaganza that defies reason….but works so well. The evening followed with live music stage set up in the bar festival tent.
Saturday began with the drag race with many races featuring allsorts of machines. The all women's class shortly followed. Great to see this is a unisex event and the awesome machines racing. The Electric class shortly followed, this was great we were able to hammer our machine down the track and really test it out. We had a great reaction from the commentator Ant Partridge as well as the crowd. We were up against some awesome bikes from English electric motor company, really showing the advances in modern technology. As described by the crowd and commentators it was a strange race, watching racing with no loud engines! However with no engine sounds we made up for it with looks and style! The unconventional look of our electric chopper really stood out and got some great attention from all.
The event was in full swing, the usual events followed in due course, sprint and hill climb. The Malle 100 was up shortly after, where 100 racers would race in teams of 10 to narrow down to 10 final racers who raced on the Sunday. This race featured the traditional Le Mans-style standing start.
The final ceremony took place announcing the winners from all classes. Slaughter House Customs left Kefington Hall full of motoring enthusiasm, with lots of inspiration for the next year and eager to find what we can get our hands on next. All fun was had by all, and as traditional as it sounds it wasn’t the winning, it was the taking part was most fun. Great work from the team at Malle, and as always an amazing experience well coordinated and beautifully run, see you all next year!
